Some other early settlers were John Eliot (baptized December 26, 1623), Jabez Oliver (baptized January 25, 1624), Ebenezer Badger (baptized February 8, 1625) and Peter Gough (born October 7, 1626). They built homes along with others around what is now downtown Waltham. In 1781, Boston merchants James Nicholson and Nathaniel Parker founded a trading post at West Roxbury on Route 3 near where Interstate 95 meets Interstate 95A today (/i 93/). They called their new business West Roxbury Trading Post & Warehouse & General Store (). The first post office opened on November 1st., 1782 under this name.]] At first they sold goods directly to consumers but soon developed into a wholesale importer/distributor of goods from all over New England.]] In 1812 general William Henry Harrison moved his headquarters to Waltham from Greenfield so that he could be closer to Washington D C during the American Revolutionary War].] In 1814 he donated land for use as a military arsenal at Bound Brook which later became home to Harvard University.]] On May 5th., 1831 Reva Pemberton married Drury Hooper of Marblehead,, MA who became one of America’s most prominent abolitionist women].] On July 4th., 1830 Reva Pemberton gave birth to her only child by Drury Hooper:Harriet Beecher Stowe ].Walking through downtown today one can see remnants of many early businesses including Nicholsons trading post which stood until 1863 when it burned down], Planks market place which lasted until about 1870],the old courthouse where services were held for several townships before finally being discontinued in 1951],and finally Hinsdale’s department store building located across Meeting House Square from present day HQ US Army Garrison Forces Headquarters
