Waltham, Massachusetts is a town located in the Middlesex County of Massachusetts. The population was 15,853 at the 2010 census. Waltham had a total area of 18 square miles (46 km2). The town began as a small village on the banks of the River Wachusett, east of Boston. It grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s as men and women began to move into new homes in the area around Waltham Common. By 1870, Waltham had reached its peak population with over 20 households. By 1890, however, it had shrunk to 10 families and 5 businesses. During World War I, Waltham served as an important military base for mobilizing American forces in northeastern Massachusetts. In 1920, developers started construction on what would become downtown Waltham. The first phase of development saw the erection of dozens of buildings including several churches and a jail. The second phase saw the addition of an amusement park and other commercial businesses. However, by 1930 most city-owned land in downtown was vacated for development and much of what remains today was developed as single-family housing subdivisions or apartment blocks called “the Developments” by developers who wanted to attract higher-income residents to their areas

Waltham is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 12,691 at the 2010 census, making it the largest municipality in Middlesex County. Waltham is located on the south shore of Boston Harbor. The first Europeans to visit Waltham were two Jesuit missionaries, Fathers John and Francis Juniper, who landed there on December 11, 1630 on their ship "San Francisco". They named the place Quimby because they found a swampy area where they thought there might be fish. In 1763, Governor William Petty commissioned Colonel James Palfrey to map out what would become the town of Waltham. Palfrey's plan called for a road from Cambridge to Ipswich and then along present-day Route 128 to reach Waltham Center; however this was never built. In 1772–73 Theophilus Parsons set up a sawmill atpresent-day Watertown in what is now Monroe Street and Main Avenue in what is now part of Quincy Village. This started large-scale settlement in that area and soon several other mills followed suit mining lead, tin, silver and other minerals near Lakeshore Road (now Middleborough Road). In 1801 Amos Stoddard bought land southeast of present-day Route 128 from Peter Minot for $2 each acre (or $1/acre today). Here he founded Stoddardville which became one of America's earliest towns when it was incorporated as Waltham on March 7, 1825 after merger with nearby Quincy Village. In 1830 railroad entrepreneur Nicholas Thomson opened up a line through downtown Boston linking Newton with Everett via Webster Street and Pittsfield before reaching Waltham Junction on February 15th 1830. This led to heavy development around Depot Square – including an influx of Germans – which helped spur economic growth during the 1840s as people coming into Boston began looking for new opportunities outside its limits
Waltham was a town in Massachusetts until the late 18th century. It was located on the south side of the river Wachusett, east of Boston. The population in 1790 was 8,812. In 1800, it had grown to 12,723. By 1860, it had increased to 31,044.
