Taunton, Massachusetts is a town in New England located on the border of Hampshire and Berkshire counties. The population was 21,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as a small farming community in 1784 near the junction of the Merrimac and Connecticut Rivers. In 1820, Taunton became one of the towns in what would become Springfield. Taunton's original downtown was destroyed by fire in 1834 but rebuilt quickly with public funds. In 1870, Taunton annexed much of neighboring Arlington Heights to its west and created a new borough named after itself – Taunton Borough. In 1922, all of Arlington Heights except for a tiny slice east of Route 1 (the old Berlin-Dover Rd.) were annexed into Taunton as well. Taunton has long been known for its agricultural production: The town's first crop was wheat in 1784; later it grew corn, beans, potatoes, apples and other fruits and vegetables; dairy products continue to be produced today; and tourism has been a majorstay since its incorporation as an incorporated municipality in 1865. The current mayor is Joseph Aiello (D). The Town Council consists of six members who are elected at-large on an staggered basis to serve four-year terms with no term limits; two seats are held by alternates each year so that one person can be unable to serve for any reason such as illness or death then be replaced by another from among their colleagues on the council who will act immediately upon learning about such vacancy without having to seek reelection next year. There are also three officers positions on staff which are filled through appointment only: Deputy Mayor - Jason Jansen (M); Treasurer - Catharine Buckley (D), & Event planner – Jackie Metzger (I). Councillors must attend all City Council meetings unless excused due to personal business or travel/health concerns which must be notified ahead via email no later than 7 days prior to meeting date(s) so that they may object orally or write a letter opposing proposed actions taken during meeting if they have not received notice informing them thereof prior to said meeting date(s)

Taunton, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Taunton was first settled in 1630 by Puritans who arrived from England. The town's present name is derived from John Winthrop's petition for incorporation in 1688. In 1768, Taunton became the capital of Middlesex County and retains that distinction to this day. The early history of Taunton can be traced back to1630 when English Puritans called the town "Tunsborough." A year later they erected a meeting house and built a tannery and other buildings on Mill Pond close to what is now Main Street. In 1635, Taunton had its first schoolhouse which was located on Meeting Street between Water Street and High Street today known as Church Road. There were also three small villages within easy walking distance of Taunton; one near where Watertown Square now stands, another just south of where Union Station sits today, and another near modern day Easton which included parts of Center Square today before it was annexed by Taunton in 1875. In 1768, during the American Revolution, local patriot Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote an essay entitled "An Address to the Community" expressing his concerns about British oppression throughout New England including his village of Westport on Long Island Sound where he lived with his wife Lucy Goodrich Hawthorne until her death in 1798). Even though most people living within easy reach sided with Great Britain during their war against America (the Patriots), Hawthorne nevertheless published his letter not only as a public statement but also as an act of political defiance against British rule - something that would become increasingly common throughout New England during the revolutionary era. This defiance led to him being arrested and/or fined several times but ultimately spared due to popular support among many residents for their beliefs even though they were not officially registered with any particular side or group... still an unprecedented event at that time! In 1769 George Washington visited Taunton while en route up Interstate 95 from Worcester MA to give speeches at West Point NY; one such speech inspired young Nathanael Hawthorne Sr., Jr.'s desire to become a U .S . Senator like Washington himself some years later! Afterward he attended dinner at Mr . Mason's (now defunct) home with General Howe and others attending military exercises off Kingston beach outside Portsmouth NH... remembers telling general Howe about my dreams so I could enter politics Today there are more than 400 businesses operating within a radius covering over 100 sq km centered around shopping centers full service areas including banks/finance/retail etc., providing better job opportunities than ever before!!! The Town of Taunton was chartered on October 25, 1764 by the General Court of Massachusetts. The town was named in honor of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Taunton, a member of the Continental Army who fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill.
