Taunton, MA is a small town in central Massachusetts. As of the 2010 census, the population was 23,876. It is the largest town in Hampshire County and the second most populous municipality in New England after Worcester, MA. Taunton has been inhabited by Native Americans for at least 8,000 years and was founded by Puritans in 1630. The first store here opened in 1792. In 1885, Taunton became one of the towns that merged to form Quincy, MA. After Quincy's incorporation as a city in 1909, Taunton became its own municipality again and retains this status to this day. The history of firearms begins with early British colonists who traveled through this area on their way to build new settlements. One such settler was John Winthrop (1621-1674), who purchased land near modern-day Taunton in 1636 or possibly earlier. Winthrop may have been inspired to open a trading post here because of his travels to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia where he had seen gunpowder weapons used against native peoples. He also noted that natives there were "not so much able as we are" to defend themselves with their own firearms and proposed establishing a military outpost here for British settlers so they could do just that! This idea was quickly approved by other colonists and soon enough Winthrop's Trading Post (later known as the Hutchinson House) had become an important center for trade throughout what would later be known as New England.
