Taunton is one of six towns in the town of Franklin and it is also one of two towns in the town of South Hadley. The first settlers to Taunton were small farmers who established homes from 1814-1820 on a site that now forms the southern edge of downtown Taunton. The first store was built by Joshua Payne in 1821 and what became known as Payne's Milling & Manufacturing Company was founded soon after. A number of other stores followed until it was decided to move manufacturing away from New England to Illinois because there were more reliable resources there. In 1827, Isaac Nichols opened Nichols' Woolen Store which remains a prominent business institution today! In 1840, Abraham Morse moved his family to Taunton from Waltham, MA and started his own grocery store called Morse's Grocery Store which still stands today on Main Street near First Avenue North. Morse later became president and owner (1912-1930)of nearby Riverbend Farms Incorporated (now part of Foxwoods Resort Casino). In 1865, an actwas passed allowing for incorporation of villages within Middlesex County; this led to the namesake village being formed around Taunton -South Hadley - with only streetlights functioning until 1907 when they were replaced by electric lights! The 21st century has seen some major changes take place in Taunton with both job growth and retail strip mall development popping up all over town while several new residential neighborhoods have sprung up including Harrison Square just northwest of downtown and Arlington Heights east of I-495 between Route 128/Route 20/Route 138/Route 24/Lincoln RoadWest!
