Taunton, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 27,826 at the 2010 census. Taunton is the largest city in Worcester County and the fifth-largest city in New England after Boston, Hartford, Bridgeport and Quincy. It is also the second most populous city in Massachusetts after Boston. The region now comprising Taunton was originally part of Hampshire County. In 1801, Worcester County was divided into two parts - one including Taunton and the other including Watertown - which led to its name change from Hampshire to Worcester County. The first settlers arrived in what is now Taunton on April 12, 1636 by boat from Plymouth Colony on Thingamajigaon Lake; they were led by Captain John Smith. The town's first store opened on Green Street within a year of its founding and soon became known as "the Fountains of Freedom" because it provided free water to residents who used it for their gardens and livestock. The town's growth continued unabated until 1763 when Governor Thomas Hutchinson ordered all towns in New England to submit to his new system of government called Congregationalism which favored small religious settlements over larger ones. This order resulted in business owners and citizens alike joining together to fight against Hutchinson's decree with local militias known as "the Committee for Defense". In 1768, an act was passed that allowed women to vote but only those who had resided continuously within their township for six months preceding Election Day could cast ballots or be registered; this restriction remained into perpetuity until 1917 when state law changed so that all women over the age of 21 can vote regardless of residency status within their municipality or county (though they still must reside within a certain number of miles of their polling place). After years of struggles against Congregationalist control throughout New England it finally fell victim to British General Edward Braddock's army during the American Revolution on October 25th., 1775 at Battle Of Bunker Hill; however despite being outnumbered three-to-one Braddock managed to drive off the British troops with just 24 casualties while inflicting more than 500 losses on his adversary. As part of efforts leading up to this engagement Taunton organized itself into a militia battalion under Colonel John Norton which fought alongside Braddock's forces
