The growth of the nearby towns of Northampton and Reading have led to an increase in housing prices within walking distance of downtown Taunton. Taunton, Massachusetts is a small town located in the southeastern corner of Massachusetts. The population was 3,605 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Taunton's history can be traced back to 1638 when it was called "Nantucket" and was part of the Colony of Assistants from Plymouth. In 1782, Taunton became a town under the jurisdiction of Worcester County. On March 14, 1807, Taunton became a village and on October 1, 1827 it became a town. The first postmaster was Lemuel Keyes. The first settlers in what would become Taunton were three men: John Henderson, Jonas Page and Ebenezer Goodrich. They came overland from Ipswich and established themselves on tracts of land that they had purchased from Captain John Smith (1636-1720). For many years there were few permanent residents in what would become Taunton because most people traveled to work in nearby villages or towns such as Northampton or Worcester. In 1792 an Act of Parliament designated Woodstock Pond as one of two sites for a new courthouse in central Massachusetts after several proposals by local farmers for an new courthouse were rejected by the select committee on public buildings chaired by Governor Samuel Adams (1711-1775). After years of discussion and study, commissioners decided on Woodstock Pond due to its location near downtown and its potential for growth as a center for commerce and industry. The cornerstone for building the new courthouse was laid on July 10, 1793 by Colonel Nathaniel Wareham (1753-1831) during his tenure as justice commissioner for Worcester County which followed America's independence from Great Britain that year. One important event associated with early days in Taunton occurred when Drury College moved into present day Barton Hall following completion of its previous home at Westborough Meeting House where classes began on September 11th, 1792 following passage of an act entitled An Act to establish Drury College within this Province; which received royal assent on December 15th but did not take effect until January 1st ensuing year [source: American Antiquarian Society - "History Of Dartmouth College"] It should be noted that Drury only moved into their current building after being forced out by rapid expansion at Westborough Meeting House which continued even beyond America's independence! Moses Hazen who served as professor at Dartmouth from 1800-1802 also played an important role in helping organize regional meetings promoting common interests among New England colleges during this time period [source: Ohio History Connection].
