Taunton, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 27,898 at the 2010 census. Taunton is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The Town of Taunton was chartered in 1753 by royal charter from Great Britain. The original name for the town was "Newbury". In 1825, it changed its name to "Taunton", after General John Taunton who had served as an officer in the American Revolution and then as a U.S. Senator from Massachusetshire (now Oxfordshire). In 1835, Taunton became one of the towns in Middlesex County that were consolidated with Somerville to form the new city ofBoston. A referendum voted on February 15, 1836 to secede from Boston and become its own separate town again with a Constitution and government that would be unique to Taunton residents only. On April 3, 1837, this secession effort failed when voters overwhelming rejected it with over 60% against it. After years of planning and discussion by both cities and their respective governing boards (the first being held in December 1870), on November 12th 1913 Boston Mayor James Michael Curley announced plans for what would become known as Providence Park which would include a new ballpark called Fenway Park/Wrigley Field which would serve as home field for both Boston Red Sox and Boston Americans teams until 1925 when they moved to Fenway Park/Wrigley Field together under baseball legend Babe Ruth’s ownership- thus becoming one of only two franchises everto have two baseplates in MLB history thereby continuing America’s single team championship rivalry right up through Steinbrenner’s purchase of Brooklyn Dodgers teams in 1961- thus finally ending this rivalry once and for all! It didn't stay that way though; within 2 years after Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey bought Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Curt Flood's old uniform from Connie Mack he put his team back into Philly where they remain today! What happened next? Well folks...Boston Red Sox manager Tommy Lasorda took over early 1980's! By 1986 he had turned their clubhouse into an annexe to Camden Yards where they played without gloves off during Spring Training!!! How about that for bad behavior by one manager... *Laughing*

Taunton, Massachusetts is a town in the town of North Taunton, in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. The population was 21,545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston-Northampton-MIT Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Taunton was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. The first European to come to present day Taunton was Captain John Smith in 1636. He named it "Nahantucket". In 1637, General John Winship and his army reached Nahantucket and burned it down as part of what is now known as King's Point Campaign. In 1638, Captains Samuel Pepys and John Winthrop founded Woburn (now Northborough) on the site of Nahantucket Pond. They were followed by other English settlers and around 1700 there were over 100 English families living in what would become Taunton. By 1700, there were also some Swiss immigrants living in the town who had come over to help farm the land. In 1701, prosperous businessman Nicholas Fitch moved from Boston to establish a new business empire centered around flour mills and cattle farms near Nahantucket Pond which he called "Fitch's Land." By 1800 his company controlled more than 1 million acres (40 km2) of land across New England! Fitch became an important figure in early American history because his mills supplied flour for local breadbaking shops and made clothing for many prominent people including George Washington and James Kappes Jr., both signers of the Declaration of Independence In 1844 Nicholas Fitch donated land at Southwick Street/Route 3 for incorporation into Taunton as a village under charter from Governor Nathaniel Hawthorne; this Village then went through several name changes before becoming North Taunton on May 14 th , 1951 . Taunton, Massachusetts was first settled in 1639 by Puritans. The town was named after the Taunton River which flows through it. In 1764, Taunton became a part of the Province of Massachusetts Bay. On January 1, 1800, Taunton became a city and was incorporated as such.
