The society soon developed into Griggstown Farms with fields stretching from Main Street north to Wellesley Road and east to Northampton Road; it continues to be operated as a functioning agricultural society today. During World War I (1914-18), many residents took up arms against Germany or joined the military; during that time there were several small skirmishes between Germans and American troops near present day Griggs Farm on Wellesley Road near where Interstate 95 meets Route 128 (the old alignment). After the war ended, most people returned home but some established themselves outside of town limits until around 1920 when they re-established themselves within walking distance of downtown buildings on Williston Avenue. The first post office opened in 1827; however, because it was located about three miles west of central business district (CBD) then known as "Taunton Square," only mail sent eastward arrived at the post office until 1861 when an addition was made west of Center Street which enabled mail service between downtown Boston and rural areas inland through routes such as Route 9A (now Interstate 93). "Downtown" originally referred only to bounded by Market Street on the south side thereof - now State Street - Riverside Drive on the north side thereof - now ElmStreet - Centre Street on both sides thereof - Broadwalk extending along each side thence all along Centre Streets frontage thereby forming what are now Government House Place – Beacon Hill line – First Parish Meeting House – Second Parish Meeting House" before 1826 when this area extended downriver past what is now Quincy Market onto Boylston Street;[2] thus Downtown proper refers not just to that original core territorially bounded rectangle but includes all subsequent extensions WESTWARD beyond that original bounds." [1] This longHistory makes Downtown special even today as businesses move into older districts closer to City Hall while newer districts are built further out towards Interstate 95
