Taunton, Massachusetts is a small town located in the southern tip of Massachusetts. The population was 12,514 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Westfield, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Taunton is known for its agricultural production and has been called "the most agriculturally diverse community in New England." The town was incorporated on February 16, 1795. The first permanent settler in what would become Taunton was John Eliot who arrived with his family in 1798. Eliot's grandson, Increase Bedford settled here in 1828 after escaping from British captivity at Hutchinson Island. Nathaniel Hawthorne also spent time here before moving to rodsville, MA later that year. In 1854, Dr. Isaac Newton Browning opened a dispensary here and quickly became one of the town's most famous residents and entrepreneurs. Browning served as Mayor from 1854 to 1860 and again from 1870 to 1880; he also chaired the board of education for much of this time period. In 1865, during America's Civil War, Taunton joined forces with General George Meade's Union army under command of Colonel Ebenezer Richardson to battle Confederate troops under Robert E Lee at battles such as Second Manassas (September 14), Antietam (December 17), Fredericksburg (May 3) and Chancellorsville (April 13). The combined effort resulted in over 700 casualties including many local residents such as Captain John Parker who died while leading an attack on Confederate positions near Chancellorsville; Parker had been born just a few miles away from Taunton on Mayflower Road nearpresent day Main Street Station

Taunton, Massachusetts (population: 27,700) is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 46,828 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous town in Plymouth County and second-most populous in Massachusetts after Boston. Taunton is located on the border of Plymouth and Belcher Counties. The towns earliest settlement was on the site of present-day Taunton; this area was first called "Nashua" by the Pilgrims because they had been there before they arrived in America. In 1636, John Winthrop founded what would become Taunton as a small farming village near Nashua. By 1795, it had grown to include over 10 villages within its borders. In 1812, during the War of 1812, Taunton joined with other towns along the Patriot Line in resisting British forces advancing toward Boston under General George Washington's command. The war resulted in many deaths for both sides and caused great destruction throughout New England; however, Taunton did not suffer any major damage. During World War II, much of eastern New England was bombed by American bombers due to strategic bombing goals directed at Japan; fortunately for humanity this occurred largely during offensives against other targets rather than directly targeting civilian populations living nearby or within range of military aircraft munitions A memorial wall has been erected around strategic sites throughout New England commemorating these events in history Today's economy centers around manufacturing and health care services while also supporting various agricultural activities including cattle ranching and cheese production
Some of the earliest settlers in Taunton were John Winthrop and his brother, Nicholas. In 1636, Colonel William Bradford purchased land in what is now Taunton from the Narragansetts and renamed it "Bradford Plantation." The first home built on the property was called "The Gracious House" and was located between present-day Market Street and State Street. Bradford's second home, which still stands today, was known as "The White House". In 1793, Captain Samuel Seppings bought the Bradford plantation and divided it into two tracts. One tract became known as Residence Hill while the other tract became known as The Manor. Captain Segments' daughter married Colonel Ebenezer Knowles of Worcester County, Massachusetts in 1801. Colonel Knowles had been one of the signers of the United States Constitution. In 1868, Captain Benjamin Fenton took control of The Manor from Colonel Knowles' son-in-law, Mr. Tuttle. Fenton turned it into a college preparatory school and named it after himself – Bennington College. In 1922, Bennington College merged with Middlebury College to become Middlebury University. Today Taunton has a population of over 60,000 people who are students at local colleges and universities including Middlebury University (founded 1922), Amherst College (founded 1802), Tufts University (founded 1889), Harvard University (19th century), Yale University (19th century), Simmons School of Business Administration (founded 1929) and Brown University (18th century).
