In 1961, when all but four towns within Hampshire County were merged into the larger city of Boston (the remaining villages became towns themselves), Taunton retained its own elected government with a mayor and five commissioners responsible for providing services such as public safety, education, economic development, libraries/town Hall administration and street cleaning. This system continued until 1987 when it was replaced by an appointed board which provides general services to all municipalities within Boston metropolitan area

A post office called Taunton was established in 1784, and received its current name of Taunton in 1818. The town center was built between 1824 and 1830 by John Dexter as a result of land grants he received from President James K. Polk for his military service during the Mexican–American War. In 1829, school Superintendent Amos Kendall founded an academy which became Hampshire Institute School (now Hampshire College). In 1861, when Massachusetts seceded from United States to form its own country, Taunton residents voted to remain part of that new country despite a boycott ordered by then-President Abraham Lincoln because they felt their taxes were too high. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender and the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, many Japanese refugees settled in Taunton after being forced out of other U.S.-occupied areas such as California or Hawaii. Some Japansen who had been living abroad decided to move back into America upon hearing about open housing opportunities here after the war; this group also included Tomokazu Sugimura who would later become one of Japan's leading business figures and second Prime Minister under Emperor Hirohito
The early history of Taunton, Massachusetts can be traced back to 1635, when the town was founded by Puritans. It became a part of Massachusetts in 1792. In 1846, Taunton was renamed Fort Worth. It then became a city in 1907 and was named after Fort Worth, Texas, United States military headquarters at that time. The city has since changed its name to Omaha.
