The town of Taunton, Massachusetts is home to one of the oldest gun sights in the United States. The first gun sight in Taunton was an early 17th century musket range that was destroyed by a fire. In 1892, the town set up a rifle range and began using iron sights. In 1916, the Taunton Rifle Range became part of the Massachusetts National Guard and was used for target practice during World War I. It closed in 1919 but reopened as a rifle range in 1922. It remained open until it closed again in 1984. In 1984, the rifle range was leased to private owners and it continued to be used as a shooting ground until it closed again in 1990.
