Taunton, Massachusetts is a small town located in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester metropolitan area. The town was first settled in 1723 by British colonists and named for Taunton, England. Taunton's growth as a small agricultural community came about because it was near the major trade routes between New England and Europe. In 1801, Taunton became an incorporated town and soon developed into a manufacturing center due to its location on the border of two large markets: Boston and Philadelphia. By 1900, Taunton had become one of the most important textile towns in New England. The town's economy changed again in World War II when production shifted to war materials such as planes and tanks. After the war, however, textile jobs dried up and Taunton slowly lost its status as an economic center during the late 20th century. Today, many businesses remain in Taunton with primary focus on education and healthcare services such as health clinics and hospitals. Additionally, there are a few heavy industry operations left including aluminum smelting plants (closed down) as well as power generation from wind turbines/turbines/. The name "Taunton" comes from two different places - Teutonicmeaning 'town upon a hill' or 'settlement'. This name was given to this place because of its strategic location along Route 3 which ran through central Massachusetts at that time; making it easy for traders to get supplies from New England via this route." As early settlers arrived in what is now Taunton they named their land after hills near them- Teutonic meaning 'town upon a hill'. The original settler were Capt John Winthrop who founded Plymouth Colony in 1620., Lt Col Alexander Sinclair who set out from Weymouth crossing over frozen Lake Winnipesaukee on Christmas Day 1720., Rev James White who traveled into Connecticut along present day I- highway 6 Nov 1722., Joshua Eliot Colonel of Militia Company A March 25th 1724,, George Winslow Captain Feb 1st 1725,, Samuel Adams Mohegan Indian Trader May 26th1726.. These people were all seeking new opportunities away from home so they named their land around them accordingly-Teutonic meaning 'town upon a hill'. Because this area lay on main trade Routes 3 & also had good soil for agriculture these settlers saw themselvespromote their new settlement by naming it after hills nearby (elements like Mount Beacon Hills etc). Taunton, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,047 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first settler in Taunton was John Winthrop in 1630. In 1634, Taunton received its charter from the General Court of Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1785, the town had a population of 1,372 and developed into a prosperous manufacturing center with cotton textile production and paper mills as well as an agricultural sector that produced hay and peaches. In 1865, Taunton became one of the towns within the new Commonwealth of Massachusetts when it was organized as a city by ordinance passed by the Legislature; this followed years of petitioning by residents for autonomy. The city limits were expanded to include portions of neighboring Needham and Waltham counties until they were reduced to their current boundaries in 1974 after another municipality became independent from Taunton – Arlington Heights. During World War II, much activity took place here among veterans who were helping build bases throughout North America while also providing jobs for local civilians such as nurses and truck drivers; afterwards there was significant decline in industry which has led to some downtown areas being abandoned or gentrified since then though there are still some businesses left standing including several banks and restaurants dating back to early 20th century times (e.g., A&W Root Beer). The town of Taunton was founded in 1772 by Captain Nathaniel Cooke. The first settler, John Morse, arrived in 1775. The town was named for General George Washington, who had visited the area during his military campaigns in America. In 1814, Taunton became a part of Massachusetts and was renamed Springfield.
