The first inhabitants of Taunton were residents of Waltham and Medford in what is now Greater Boston. English colonists arrived in 1630 and began to settle here in 1635 by taking land from the Narragansetts. In 1723, British troops burned down the old Indian village of Mount Hope after they were defeated by Native Americans at nearby West Point. This incident further aroused European interest in the area and led to more settlers coming here. By 1800, Taunton had a population of over 20 families. In 1853, Taunton became a separate town when it split off from Waltham for economic reasons. At that time, only about 10 households lived there; by 1860 its population had increased to 100+. By 1870, however, most people living around Taunton had left for other towns within Middlesex County because there was no railroad running through it and agriculture was becoming less profitable due to changing prices for goods produced in Europe relative to prices back home. However, some farmers decided to stay and started developing farms that include today’s downtown district (the original center of town). One benefit of this agricultural isolationism was that many different types of crops could be grown successfully here without losing marketability or quality; thus maintaining some degree of diversity throughout the community even as production changed over time.
