Taunton was founded in 1638 by Puritan colonists from England. The town was named for Thomas Taunton of Hingham, who had been appointed surveyor for Plymouth Colony in 1635 and served as its first mayor. The first stores were established in 1722 on Meeting Street across from what is now the Perkins School of Management at Tufts University. That year, John Adams began his second term as President of the United States with Taunton as his official residence. One of Adams' most memorable moments took place here on October 11th when he delivered remarks to a joint session of the New Hampshire General Court—the first time that such proceedings had taken place outside Boston proper since British settlement began there in 1603. In 1848, Taunton became one of four towns within the newly created Middlesex County when it was organized out of parts of Plymouth and Worcester counties. At that time it boasted a population totaling only 3 people; today it has over 50K residents according to the 2010 census figures alone! The growth has been largely due toCommercial development and annexation by other municipalities throughout Middlesex County since then including Newton (1976), Lawndale (1991), Everett (2001), South Hadley (2008) and Arlington Heights (2010). The town of Taunton was founded in 1638 by Increase Mather and named for thethen small English village of Taunton in Oxon County, England. The first settler in the town was John Smith, who arrived in 1639. In 1641, Samuel Pemberton built a sawmill on the river Wachusett. The mill continued to be run until 1847. Other early businesses in Taunton were a grocery store and a dry goods store. In 1851, Taunton became one of the towns within the newly formed Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Taunton experienced some significant growth during its early years. A school was built in 1795, and a water system was installed in 1812. A courthouse and jail were also constructed during this time period. The population of Taunton increased from about 100 people in 1800 to over 1,000 by 1850. Additionally, development occurred around the new town square which would later become known as "The Square". This period of growth helped to define Taunton as an important community throughout its history. During World War II, many local companies contributed their resources to support the war effort including munitions production at Castlereagh Mills and shipbuilding at Ipswich Shipbuilding Company Ltd.. After the war ended, much redevelopment took place around downtown Taunton with construction beginning on what is now known as The Square which eventually included several shopping malls and other commercial properties nearby
