The first Europeans to visit Taunton were the Pilgrims in 1623 and they named it after their sponsor, King George II of England. The town was founded on April 12, 1795 by sawmills owners Isaac Adams and his brother-in-law Benjamin Lincoln. It was incorporated as a city on February 14, 1839. In 1865 Taunton became one of the original ten townships in Worcester County when that county was created from parts of Essex and Hampshire counties. In 1912 Taunton had a population of 21%. In 1968 it lost its charter as an independent city and became part of the larger Springfield metropolitan area. Today, Taunton is home to several large businesses including Best Buy, General Electric Company (GE), Monsanto Company (Monsanto), Eli Lilly & Co., United States Bancorp (UNB), TD Ameritrade Inc., Boston Scientific Corporation (BSCI) and Bristol Myers Squibb Company (BMC). There are also smaller businesses such as two farms with over 1,000 acres of land that produce cheese and eggs; five local restaurants; three banks; four pharmacies; two health clubs; two golf courses; six schools – four elementary schools and four high school grades K through 12th schools – plus many other services provided by its numerous businesses and organizations such as the Chamber Of Commerce chamber orchestra which performs at various public venues around town every month rain or shine during summertime while also providing educational opportunities for children living in poverty areas nearby

Taunton, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, New England. The population was 9,859 at the 2010 census. Taunton is located on the southeastern border of Plymouth County and across the Connecticut River from Hartford, Connecticut. The town has a total area of 21 square miles (54 km2). The first Europeans to visit Taunton were exploration parties led by Captain John Smith in 1609. In 1614–15, Taunton was granted a charter by King William III of England for an ecclesiastical settlement called "Newbury". It became part of Plymouth Colony in 1633; but because Newbury specifically exempted women from military service and dues allegiance thereto, it suffered greatly during the English Civil War (1642-1651). After the Restoration of Charles II in 1660, Newbury passed through his hands and was purchased by Increase Mather for £4 profit on 30 October 1663. On 5 April 1666 Mather sold it to Nicholas Conte for £20 worth of goods only; he then put it into trust for future use as an agricultural station known as Weston House. In 1769 Taunton had a population of 3290 people living according to records kept bythe Congregational church there. By 1800 its population had grown to over 4500 people living within three hundred acres (157 km2) ; but this growth stopped abruptly due to large-scale emigration during the Revolutionary War (1775-1783). During most of its early years Taunton was under friendly occupancy by Quakers who established their Meeting House there in 1711 which still stands today along with other buildings including barns and other outbuildings associated with that time period such as a schoolhouse and parsonage which are also still standing today together with some landscaping changes made since then such as planting trees around most streetscapes like Main Street or Northampton Road. This peaceful atmosphere soon changed when hostilities began between Great Britain and her French allies culminating in what is now known as Lexington & Concord back home in Massachusetts which eventually led to open warfare between British troops and American colonists until finally peace came about two years later following hard fought negotiations culminating with General Thomas Gage's surrender at Saratoga Springs . At that time all Quaker properties east of Boston were confiscated along with any property owned west thereof including much valuable farmland currently used for housing developments . The new government ordered all quaker homes destroyed except those few that remain now scattered throughout eastern Massachusetts including parts of Rhode Island where they continue operations today albeit without meeting any legal challenges

The town was named after Henry Puritan settler John Taunton and his wife Mary. In 1784, the town passed through an act of Congress to form a new county, and was named Middlesex County. On July 1, 1803, Middlesex County merged with Reading County to form Massachusetts General Court District 1.
