Springfield, Massachusetts is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 25,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The history of Springfield goes back to 1636 when English colonists founded the town of Springfield on land granted by the Massachusettes. In 1803, the town was named for General Jonathan Braddock and it became an important transportation hub for goods from New England toBoston and vice versa. By 1847, there were over 40 businesses in downtown Springfield employing over 1000 people including breweries, pharmacies and cigar stores. In 1916, a group of businessmen led by Alfred Pappas purchased two blocks east of downtown and began developing what would become known as "Papp's Place." This development included a movie theater (the first in Springfield), several restaurants (including Papp's Pizza), a bowling alley (now called Midway) and a small parkland complex that still exists today. In 1954, Papp's Place was renamed "Adams Park" in honor of Charles Adams who had been instrumental in developing the town into what it is today. On November 4th, 1921*, one hundred years after its founding as Springfield-on-the-Massachusetts side of Interstate 95*, the first radio station in America broadcast from localities throughout New England emanating from studios located at Adams Park
