The modern firearms industry started with several firearms designs submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office in October of 1875. The first design, called the Colt 1873 Pistol, was based on a design by colonel James A. Smith of the US Army's 1st Infantry Regiment. The pistols were made from 17-inch barrel barrels that were bored out to .50 caliber and chambered for the 6-pounder cartridge. They were also designed to be very reliable, with a reported kill rate of 90%. With such high success, Colt began manufacturing them domestically and export sales soon followed. In 1888, Colt introduced its Model 1886 Rifle which featured a 16-inch barrel and an octagon magazine holding 25 rounds. When the area that is now Springfield was first settled in the 17th century, it was part of what were called the Wabanaki Confederacy. The Wabanaki were a Native American tribe and their territory extended from present-day Maine to as far north as what is now Quebec. The town of Springfield began to form around 1765 when two Anglican ministers, Rev. Samuel Prescott and Rev. John Eliot, moved from Worcester, Massachusetts to a location west of Boston known as Danvers (now Quincy). They founded a small town named for them, which they called "Springsfield." The first school in Springfield was built on the site of Present-day Wellesley High School in 1771. A Congregational minister, Dr. Joseph Warren, served as its first teacher and opened the school with 33 students in September of that year. By 1800 there were 413 students at Wellesley; by 1828 there were 1,448 students at Springfield Central High School. In 1847 the Hartford Road Bridge over the Connecticut River linking Springfield with Hartford was built; this caused much traffic congestion onSpringfield's Main Street and made it necessary to build a new high school on Notre Dame Avenue between First and Second Streets east of downtown in 1855. One reason why Springfield grew so rapidly during this time was its location near several major railroads: The Manchester Road Railroad ran parallel to Highland Avenue south of downtown;the New England Railroad passed through townnorthwest of Highland Avenue;andtheSpringfield & Western Railway crossedSouthbury Streetand entered into townjust eastof Notre Dame Ave.; all three railroad companies offered transportation services that encouraged growth within town limits. Additionally, because many people living within easy walking distance worked along these railroads or took buses to work outside town, goods arrived quickly and prices stayed low for residents throughout most of this period. This situation changed only after World War II when automobiles became popular and began driving up prices for goods relative to salaries statewide; however, due to its central location within New England among other factors., Springfield continued to grow economically until recently!
On July 16, 1776, during the American Revolution, Springfield was the site of a skirmish between British forces and Patriot forces. The town was burned by the British in what is now known as the Battle of Springfield.
