It is the second-largest town in Hampden County after West Springfield. The town of Springfield was platted on April 24, 1788, by General John Adams and Amos Kendall. The first post office was established in 1789. The original name of the town (amusingly spelled "Pleasant Hill") may have been derived from the fact that many of its early settlers were friends and colonists of Captain John Smith who had settled in what is now Rhode Island. On February 14, 1792, Springfield became part of Massachusetts as a result of the Boston Massacre Act which gave Massachusetts independence from Great Britain In 1812 Springfield received land from Worcester County for $7000 to become an organized township with a government under a moderator appointed by the state legislature. In 1828 it again voted to secede from Massachusetts due to political differences with Worcester County over questions pertaining to education and taxation; this time it joined Lowell and other towns within Middlesex County in forming what would be called "the New England Anti-Slavery Society". In 1835–36 two young men named Charles Sumner and Stephen Averill fought in an unsuccessful slave uprising at Dover Plains outside of Springfield; reports say that they were armed only with pistols because they believed that any fighting would lead to more slaves being freed given enough encouragement. In 1861 during American Civil War Springfield sided with Confederate America against the Union side; however when war began their neutrality was violated and on November 8th they laid down their arms becoming one of over 150 communities throughout eastern Massachusettes that surrendered without firing a shot while Yankee forces burned homes and destroyed crops near them

The first permanent settler in what would become Springfield was Captain John Smith who arrived on May 8, 1692 with his family from Portsmouth, Virginia. It became known as Springfields School when it was moved to its current location on State Street nearpresent day Wellesley Avenue on February 1st 1836 by Reverend Elijah Purdy (a Congregational minister). The present Academy building replaced an earlier structure that burned down on December 12th, 1824. In 1836–1837 Governor Andrew Johnson ordered local builder James Wigglesworth to erect a two story brick schoolhouse at Third and Hope Streets; this building served as both a public schoolhouse and jail until 1840 when Johnson appropriated $1,500 to build a more grandiose replacement – now called “Old North” – which still stands today adjacent to Adams Place mall across First Street from City Hall. On October 25th 1854 Mayor Hickey dedicated “New York” School House (later called Stuyvesant High School) which had been built by Wigglesworth for $3200 at Seventh and Second Streets corner lot formerly occupied by Furniture Warehouse; this building served as both a public school house and municipal court until 1861 when Mayor Atherton leased it back to Mr. Wigglesworth for use as an academy for girls until September 1893 when he sold it to Mrs Justice Harlan Forbush who changed its name to “Springfield Female Seminary” before returning it back to Mr Wigglesworth in 1903/04 finally becoming “Springfield Female Seminary” once again until its closure effective date due to lack of funding on January 1st 2009 .On April 26th 1959 Quincy High School opened following reconstruction following a fire that destroyed district auditoriums located east side between Main Street - across from Old South Bank grocery store -and Union Station Road; Quincy later closed due largely because enrollment declined while other schools flourished including Merton College (now Emerson College) which opened adjacent buildings soon afterwards . Accordingly many historical markers were plastered all around town beginning with just 6 spots around old downtown core where streetlightsonce shone thru Historical marker #1 has grown up over time! Some highlights include: Pioneer Monument atop Capitol Hill northwest corner containing scale model replica & original inscription honoring early settlers including Captains John Smith & William Dawes along with Indian Chiefs Standing Bear & Sachem Weahkonie outside old courthouse square northeast corner opposite State House south side next door existing post office since 1793 Architectural features include: Original Federal style 7 stories high red brick limestone three level penthouses featuring asymmetrical Ionic order Corinthian Ω pilasters rising twenty feet above roof Additional features may be found inside or outside these iconic facades such as large arched windows unusual flanking cornices waist high trimmed gables/corners rich enameled cast iron railing typical details included stone quoins well executed Colonial Revival style ornamentation including dentil moldings rampant frieze devices common throughout region such as Masonic Temple nearby site originally home of late Dr Elihu Yale circa 1860s-1980s Today there are several events each year highlighting significant moments or aspects connected with Springfield history like Homecoming parade held annually in late July celebrating heritage prior thereto parades honoring various civic organizations held yearly throughout fall culminating in Christmas Parade typically occurring early spring preceding Easter Egg Hunts
