The town experienced significant growth during the 19th century with numerous buildings being built including a Masonic Temple in 1868 and an opera house in 1893. During World War I, Springfield played an important role as a military base providing food storage and ammunition to troops fighting abroad. After the war, many businesses closed but continued to grow as residential development increased. In 1950, Springfield OfficialName changed from "Springfield" to "Springfield Township". Since then, local governments have worked to keep the name unchanged while various renovation projects have taken place such as expanding sidewalks and painting buildings white for St Patrick's Day celebration purposes.
