As the world’s largest arms manufacturer, Springfield Armory has been a part of history for more than 200 years. From its early days as a small shop manufacturing muzzleloaders and muskets, to developing America’s first automatic rifle, the M1 Garand, Springfield Armory has been an integral part of American military culture. Today, their products are used in every corner of the world, including dozens of American combat units around the globe. In addition to their firearmsdivision, Springfield Armory manufactures ammunition – both traditional rounds such as buckshot and slugs; and new types of ammunition designed for modern operations, such as 3-D printing ammunition. Since 1892 when John C. Frick founded Frick & Co., one of Springfield Armory’s primary customers was the U.S. Military. As World War I drew near in 1915, Frick began receiving requests from commanders all over Europe for additional rounds suitable for use with machineguns and artillery pieces on the battlefront. With advances in technology and production methods at hand, Frick & Co soon became able to meet these needs– even adding new calibers to their line-up as needed (e.g., 5/8-inch Creedmoor round for gas guns). During World War II Springfield Armory produced munitions for more than 60 different countries including Japan; Korea; Taiwan; Philippines; Bahamas; Solomon Islands; New Zealand; United Kingdom (UK); Australia (Aus); South Africa (SA); Canada (Can); Peru (Peru)…the list goes on! One key product that emerged from WWII was Winchester Dragoon Ammunition which Incorporated a newly developed jacketed projectile called “XBurst” which could penetrate up to 350 armor plates at 900 yards using only 1/2 pound of propellant per shot! Today's armorers continue supplying our country's militaries with safe and effective ammunition that is essential to mission success worldwide

These projectiles were made from stone, wood, or metal and had to be balanced so that they would fall within a certain range before being released. In addition to shot putt, early firearms used lead balls instead of nails because it was easier to control and fire than wooden or metal projectiles. Lead balls were also harder than nails so they could penetrate more easily through enemy armor. In the 16th century, cannons began to be built which required larger amounts of ammunition than earlier artillery pieces. This led to the development of cannonball ammo which was created by loading smaller lead balls with powder and firing them off at high speeds into targets far away from human attention
The first cartridges for the modern firearms were invented in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. They were a type of round that fired a metal projectile with a weight behind it that was pulled back by an elastic band, causing the projectile to enter and explode in the target.
The town of Springfield, Massachusetts was founded in 1788 by the Reverend Samuel Adams. The town grew quickly and became a thriving center for trade and industry. In 1812, Springfield was renamed to honor General USS Springfield after the successful battle against British forces at that location. In 1792, tax assessors in Springfield assessed $4,670 for the town's poor. The assessment was raised to $10,000 in 1812. In 1830, a new courthouse and jail were built in Springfield. The town also acquired land east of Market Street to build an Orthodox synagogue.
