They built a small village on an island in the river called Mill Neck and named it after their mill which they operated for several years. On July 1, 1827, Northampton County became part of Massachusetts and Somerville became its county seat; however, it retained its own charter and name until 1881 when it merged with Middlesex County to form what is now Boston metropolitan area. As such, it continues to be one of only two towns within New England still governed by its own municipal government—the other being Portsmouth NH. In 1969–70 during renovations at Fenway Park (now TD Garden), part of an overall remodeling project that also included renovating most all other major American sports venues throughout the Northeast,[1] parts of Somerville were moved including a section located behind home plate which had been used as storage for team equipment since 1903 when Fenway Park opened.[2][3] That particular piece came down during game day celebrations commemorating those festivities[4] and has never been seen again since!
