Somerville is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Somerville was first settled by English colonists in 1630 as part of what is now Somerville and Watertown communities on the South Shore of Boston. In 1732, it became a part of the Province of Massachusetts Bay. When that province was disbanded in 1775, Somerville became part of the newly created United States of America. The town's first mayor was Nathaniel Dexter and its first Selectman were Samuel Adams and John Browning. The mouth of the River Pembroke lies within Somerville's boundaries and has been an important fishing and trade route for centuries; today, there are several small businesses located along its banks catering to both local fishermen and visitors who come to fish for lobster or other seafood dishes from upstream in Charlestown or downstream in Milton). In 1842, when Route 128 (then called "The Grind" Boulevard) crossed Somerville Bridge into Quincy, large numbers of poor farmers had migrated from rural areas eastward into Quincy to take advantage of new opportunities offered by development along that route. To avoid this migration (and resultant disruption to commerce), the state legislature passed a law providing for compulsory segregation within public housing projects on opposite sides of Route 128 between white and black residents—an act which has been cited as one reason why Quincy remains majority African American today despite reaching nearly 90% White during its heyday as a white-minority community). This Jim Crow policy continued until 1964 when legislation abolished all public housing projects throughout Massachusetts effective November 1st (following years with some modest increases in minority representation among elected officials). For most people living through Reconstruction Periods – after America’s Civil War – Reconstruction Era memories are largely negative: Yankee rule brought great hardship while also creating social problems which could not be solved without help from outside groups such as blacks who operated under fractional ownership schemes; landless freedmen formed cooperatives; gangs ruled many neighbourhoods………. [but] most people generally forget about these dark times which affected so many families…..Many events during this time period still remain difficult to comprehend even more than 50 years later….. For example: virtual loss experienced by descendants when their ancestors were forcibly taken from their homes due simply to being black; lack access to education or healthcare available to most residents; high rates cf crime especially among young men………… [But] little research has been done on Somerville history specifically focusing on those periods following World War I because very few books or articles have been written about it since then."
