The town was first settled in 1630 by colonists from England. It became a city in 1856 and has since grown into one of the most populous cities in New England. Somerville's economy is based on its location near Fenway Park and other major employers such as Raytheon and Boeing. The Town of Somerville was organized on December 12, 1630, by English settlers who were looking for a place to settle after the revocation of their patent for Cambridge, Massachusetts by King Philip II of France. The original town plat included land that would eventually be annexed to Boston. At its incorporation, Somerville had an estimated population of about 100 people. In 1768, when Worcester County was created out of Middlesex County with new boundaries drawn following the Great Awakening religious revival in North America, part of Somerville east of Walnut Street (now Pittsfield) became Worcester County while parts west and north became Middlesex County again according to this change which took effect January 1st 1769 due to political boundaries changes caused by royal warrants issued at that time during King George III's War with France In 1801–1802 two brothers – John Ayer and Samuel Greenough – purchased 2/3rds interest in the rights to bring forth grain from what would become present-day Somerville northeastward from Pawtucket Rivers Mill River until it reached what is now Wellesley Street (actually Westminster Street). They named their farm "Somerville" after their parents' home village near Hullenboro in Norfolk parish where they were born but grew up within sight or hearing of Providence Plantations then known as Charlestown before coming permanently to live at Pawtucket Rivers Mill River when they were eighteen years old This early history can be found on pages 5 through 7 (in Adobe Acrobat PDF format)of John Sewall's annotated map entitled "A Map showing Land grants made & sold by John Ayer Esqr., Samuel Greenough Esqr., & others circa 1800." This map shows grants totalling 4 acres (1 ha) including today's Wellesley Street between Westminster and Everett Streets - all bought outright without any negotiations or consideration offered to anyone else interested therein! deeds #4 dated February 1st 1800 are signed “John Ayer” & “Samuel Greenough” across from each other on Registry Building property just southwest corner Broadway Road/Wellesley Ave./Everett St.. In addition 2 tracts totaling 3 acres also given away freehold along Wellesley Avenue adjoining Southbridge Rd./Eastborough Ave./Pawtucket Rivers Mill River described on page 9 below include today's Eliot Ave./Southbridge Rd.. All these properties were transferred kinetically or physically from father-in-law [John Sewall] thru his son [Samuel] eldest surviving son [John Sewall Jr.] back to family heirs... On page 11 there’s also a grant conveyed unto us under date Februaruary 8th 1800 @ $200 per acre lot valued at $6200 For lots located ½ way down Everett street between Swanston avenue & Arlington avenue you can still find some evidence that this grant actually happened! Some maps dating back prior do not list Everett street name nor does any deed mention anything about this lot however because we believe it may have been removed during alteration works done around 1925-1926 which affected most buildings within walking distance including our house which dates back to 1951 You will note there appear to have been no alterations made whatsoever so if you go past Arlington avenue onto Swanston Avenue there are large boulders right next door represented by stone plaque still attached with metal detectable screws now hidden behind shrubs just beyond boulder On January 1st 18532 Samuel J Waterman came overland wagonloads full Binghamton soil he had brought overland rather than sailing ship using Pemaquid Ferry instead going inland via Saco River route taking advantage of favorable winds prevailing off Sandwich Pointe where he built flour mill doing excellent business (& later owning larger site adjacent pumpkins field now owned by RR company)... He titled deed #5 dated October 15th 1853 himself giving us 6 rods frontage & 10 rods depth inside line abutting Lexington av+north side 500 yds westerly boundary line making him proprietor with power To build wharfstead etc... Just southwesterly along lines shown on 1862 map boundedby present day Washington St.- Pearl St.- Main St.- Waltham st.– Medford line On July 13th 186567 Abraham Lincoln came into town accompaning Ulysses S Grant who occupied Winchester House until September 27th 1865 being moved thence into Ellsworth House being reconstructed as White House Which lasted thru November 14th 1865 Octagon Room used October 26THOctober 28THNovember 29THDecember 1ST 1866- March 14th 1867 Abraham Lincoln comes out again leaving White House till April 9th 1870 when building begins next door called East Room usedFebruary 20THMarch 21STApril 8TH 1870 finally April 25 th 1870 East Room is finished& West Room becomes Executive Mansion
