The name comes from English meaning "settlement by the woods." The first settler in what is now Somerville was John Winthrop, who arrived there in 1630. He built a small cabin on the banks of the river Medway and named it after himself. In 1635-36, Puritan settlers from England founded a small religious community here known as "Hingham". They removed to Hingham because of religious intolerance prevailing back then. The English name for Somerville remained unchanged until 1795 when it was anglicized to its current form: Somerville. After their settlement failed in 1635-36 due to lack of resources and persecution from local Puritans (the town's namesake), some early English colonists decided to move on and found other settlements around here such as Wareham (now part of Boston) in 1638 or Salem (now part of Worcester) in 1640-41. However, many more settlers moved into present day Somerville directly from England between 1640 and 1700 thanks to open door immigration policies implemented by King James II following his reign which allowed anyone over the age of twenty-one with prospects for becoming an American citizen to settle anywhere within British America without fear of loss of citizenship or social ostracism if they did not perform certain specified tasks such as working on land or being baptized a Protestant Christian like themselves This policy later became known as "The Great Migration" because many people turned up in large numbers just before and during the American Revolution seeking independence from British rule).
