Somerville is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 33,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The earliest settlers in what is now Somerville were English Quakers who came from Pembroke Dock in Devon in 1638 and landed on the present site of Somerville on April 20, 1640. They named their new town after a small village in Norfolk, England which they had visited two years earlier. By 1765, the town had a population of over 100 people and was incorporated as a village on November 1 that year by an act of the Massachusetts General Court. In 1836, during America's gold rush period (the first major wave of immigration to New England following Independence), many people from Somerville turned out for prospecting near Amherst and Lexington because they felt that there would be more money to be found there than anywhere else in New England. The townspeople soon realized that this was not always true and withdrew most of their colonists toAmherst or Lexington due to competition from these larger towns. However, some continued to live and work in Somerville until 1840 when it became an unincorporated community once again under the jurisdiction of the state government. However, by 1870s most of the original Quaker settlers had died out or moved away while many other families arrived during what became known as "The Great Migration". Somerville, Massachusetts is a small town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts located on the border of Worcester and had a population of 7,542 at the 2000 census. The first permanent settlement in what is now Somerville was made in 1630 by Puritan settlers who named their community "Plymouth" after the English port city of Plymouth. In 1776, during the American Revolution, two patriots living in Somerville were arrested for treason because they owned land that sympathized with British forces. The town's name comes from an early settler, Samuel Gridley Somerville, who purchased some land near present-day North Avenue and High Street in 1776. The first school in what is now Somerville was established in 1814. In 1836, the town received its charter fromMassachusetts General Court and became a Village. As part of this new form of government, Village residents had voting rights but no property inheritance rights. A year later, the Village passed a resolution to change its name to Somerville after Samuel Gridley Somerville's death at age 81 years old on July 3rd of that year. The name change took effect on October 1st and lasted until 1940 when it was reverted back to Plymouth due to lack of consensus among residents about which name would be more appropriate for our village-town relationship given our unique history and culture. In 1951, as part of plans for suburban development within the then-Central Square area of Worcester (now Downtown), somerville lands were donated by Mr. John Fenton to become what are now known as Central Square Park and Market Streets NE corner Waltham Center Mall thereby giving us our current location adjacent to Central Square Shopping Center; one block away from Boston Common/Copley Square/Fenway Park where we once stood next door to Southbridge Elementary School also belonging to Mr. Fenton’s donation which remains today as Gristedes Supermarket across from Central Square Park still bearing his family’s surname albeit without any connection whatsoever between him or his donation and today’s somerville community situated nearby since before he even lived here himself! Somerville has been home to many notable people over its centuries including: Drury Lowes founder & CEO –Lowes Home Hardware Company; Admiral George Washington; United States Senator John Fenton (19th century); Daniel Webster; William Weld (20th century) Additionally there are numerous churches throughout its history including First Baptist Church built in 1789 which still stands today followed by Congregational Church erected in 1823 followed by Roman Catholic Archbishop John J bulbs House consecrated on December 15th 1886 following services held inside Archbishop John J Bulbs House thereafter becoming Holy Trinity Cathedral church building & rectory complex consisting principally Of 5 Stories high Masonic Temple basement only used for services weekends ago & closed currently pursuant To heavy rains thru out Mon., Tue., Wed., Thu., Fri.; former owner Mrs Bishop Newell Cleaning Services operates store adjacent thereto open Thursdays morning 6am TO 10pm Saturdays morning 8am TO 4pm Sundays closed Sun.) together with several other churches all contributing towards making up one big religious denomination represented within this slice of time period called 'Somerville'!
