In 1834, Somerville became a separate town under Massachusetts General Laws 11:2-3; it elected its own mayor and council. During World War II, Somerville was one of eighty-six municipalities that made up Suffolk County (New England), which assisted in providing military housing for Japanese Americans living in California. After America's victory in World War II, most Japanese Americans left Somerville for Los Angeles or other cities but some continued to live here until they were forced out by federal policy in 1952. In 1990s there was an effort to bring back downtown business as well as promote new development around Fenway Park which led to more people moving into Somerville from outside the city limits over time

Somerville, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The town was founded on April 15, 1765 by Captain John Eliot and other Revolutionary War veterans as a military post named Fort Warren (now Somerville). The first school in Somerville was opened in 1769 on Meeting Street and later moved to what is now Park Avenue. The original church building still stands today on Main Street near Union Station. In 1776, Somerville became home to its own courthouse where property deeds were recorded and cases heard by justices of peace. In 1802, when Boston seceded from Great Britain, Somerville became part of the new country under American rule but continued to maintain its own government until 1847 when it joined with Newton to form Newton-Somerville Corporation which subsequently merged into Boston Common Company In 1870 Somerville incorporated as a separate village due to high levels of pollution caused by mills located nearby; this event led to the founding of Arlington Heights as a separate municipality within Somerville in 1890 On July 25th 1916 local men from Winchester who had volunteered for World War I found suitable land east of downtown and began construction of Camp Emerson which would become headquarters for Allied forces during WWI After graduating from college in 1919 Diamond Milling Co./First National Bank opened up shop on Harrison Avenue just south of Route 128 known then as Maple Leaf Foods Ltd., now Unilever plc . In 1922 he married his sweetheart Dollie Mackintosh
