The name "Somerville" comes from an Indian word meaning "happy valley." The first settlement in what would become Somerville was made on October 16, 1773 when two men named John Adams and Samuel Adams built a log cabin on the site of present-day Somerville High School. On July 4, 1825, the first post office in Somerville opened with eight stamps from New York City. At that time there were only a few buildings in Somerville; most residents lived on farms or roadsides around the square mile (1 km2) central business district which included six churches and many public buildings such as schools and stores. In 1854, businessmen Jabez Peete and Augustus Kelley bought 2/3 of land east ofpresent-day Main Street for $10 per acre (0.50 ha). They began to develop their new town by building residences, a hotel and retail storefronts along Main Street between Spring Street and Everett Avenue. By 1860 there were over 100 homes in operation and over 500 people living in Somerville proper according to census records In 1870–71 some developers built more than 100 houses on what are now Highland Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue north of present-day Commonweal Boulevard On November 26th 1890 local voters passed a resolution authorizing incorporation as a village but no action was taken until 1893 when officials appointed by the state government recommended incorporation as an incorporated town under the name “Grant” after General George Washington Grant who had served as president from 1849 to 1858 In 1899–1900 Mayor Fenton purchased 6 acres (2 ha) northeast ofthe Square Mile for use as parkland . A year later he donated another 5 acres (2 ha) south ofthe Square Mile to be used for library lands . In 1906–07 authorities approved plans to build an ice rink on North Beacon Hill near downtown . This became reality in 1908 when construction began with authorization from city fathers five years later The opening ceremonies were held that year at North End Hall followed by ice skating throughout December

Somerville is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 21,751 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston–Cambridge-NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The towns of Medford and Quincy also lie within Somerville's boundaries. The first European settlers in what is now Somerville were three men from Holland who settled there in 1636. They named their new land "New Amsterdam" because they had just arrived from that city in New Netherland. The first settler in what is now Somerville was Nicholas Northrup, who came to the area in 1724 as part of the larger movement by Englishmen to found settlements throughout America. Northrup's home at present-day Randolph Street was one of several early homes in the town center that still stand today. In 1812, when Massachusetts became a state, Somerville became part of Hampshire County and remained so until 1846 when it become Middlesex County again. In 1846, a small community called West Newton developed south of Route 9 between Easton and Arlington Streets on lands owned by Colonel Amos Dowling which he donated to the county for public use as a courthouse square and schoolhouse district. That settlement eventually grew into Somerville proper with its own post office (1850) and fire department (1871). After American independence, Somerville voted to join Massachusetts as an unincorporated community rather than become part of the newly formed Commonwealth of Independent States following the warring stateshood referendum vote on July 4th, 1800 . This vote resulted in most New England communities seceding from Massachusetts due to differences over taxation schemes – Somerville voted to remain within the new state but lost its status as an unincorporated community because it paid taxes only to Middlesex County instead of municipalities such as Boston or Worcester which were based both inside and outside of Massachusets borders.. In 1830s through 1860s much development took place along Route 9 north-south including many large houses built for farmers including George Hennepin’s grand house built beginning in 1840 on land that would later be renamed Park Square (now Harrison Square). Many prominent people lived here during this time including Isaac Brockman (the father/founder/CEO/CEO emeritus headhunter at Oracle), Nathaniel Hawthorne (author/writer), John F Kennedy (Presidential Candidate 1960), David Frost (NBC Nightly News Anchor) and Stevie Wonder(composer). While Route 9 remains extant today there has been no major development along it for over 60 years since it was closed off from traffic back then by developers looking out for high end residential properties only!
