Somerville, Massachusetts is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The original settlement formed in 1630 by Puritans from London as part of the creation of what is now Middlesex County. The first permanent English settler in Somerville was John Winthrop and his wife Experience Alden. In 1635 they moved to what would become Somerville after purchasing land from Samuel Winslow. By 1638 they had laid out a town grid on a river bottom and named it Ipswich after their home town in Suffolk, England. The town charter was granted on November 3, 1638. In 1746 Nathaniel Dawes landed at Mystic Bay with his family and began establishing Farmsstead Pond (now Newton) upstream from present day Somerville Center on Long Island Sound opposite New York City as an agricultural center for the new colony of Connecticut Colony under Governor Jonathan Trumbull. On July 10, 1748, he patented to all present within this limits 23 rods square containing 640 acres (248 hectares). In 1751 he sold most or all of these holdings eastward to James Bowdoin who renamed him Bowdoin's Manor after himself and moved his family there also in 1752 when he took over ownership of Montague House from General Richard Amherst’s father-in-law Thomas Gage which then became one of the largest villages west of Boston proper." In 1800jamin Fitch built a small house near the intersection of Washington Street and Pleasant Street on Beacon Hill as a summer place for Fitch's friends including future Ulysses S Grant who later bought it; it remains standing today as Fitch House Museum No 7 (formerly known as "Grant's Mansion"). After two years Warrants Nos 7 & 8 were issued for 1/4 acre lots adjoining Fitch House on Boylston Street between State Road 9Wand 11N; these Lots were surveyed but never platted because William Prescott found water power available only upriver at Eliot Dam where he erected mills dating back to 1807 which are still operating today(see Map below). In 1802 Amos Eaton bought some improved land south sidewest corner Washington Street & Pleasant Streets from Stephen Jones Jr., lot 176; this property contain’d 2 buildings now demolished: One A frame structure measuring 30' × 20', lot 4 Seminary Room building formerly used by Harvard College Class Of ‘87 Female dormitory beside said building called Home Schooling School for Boys thenceforth known as “Eaton” schoolhouse until about 1840 when that building was destroyed by fire; second A frame structure measuring 30' × 22', lot 5 Spawning Pool Building formerly used by Dexter Perry Company tannery next door thereto sinceabout 1853 commonly called “ grant storehouse” thenceforward known simply as Grant Storehouse." Spanish missionaries founded missions here in 1562–1566 under Father Francisco de Asis y Menendez among others before moving away during Puritan persecution in northern Massachusetts during King Philip's War (1675–1676). Jesuit priests begun arriving here following Revolución Francesa during eighteenth century rule across North America with Massachusettians taking up residence along Mainland Trail through western Worcester County beginning January 1, 1700 — making Somerville one of oldest settled areas north American mainland presence having been confirmed by colonial authorities even though much further south Bassano River valley had been claimed originally by Indian tribe Wampanoag people.- Jesuit priest Fray Nicolas Rodrigues arrived May 6th 1700 settling near present day Brighton Beach.- Father Lorenzo Nunez arrives December 24th 1700 followed several days later by brethren Pedro Calderon de la Hoz.– Father Jacques Marquette arrive October 12th 1739 settling just south northeast corner Washington Street & Pleasant Streets where Don Francis Yarmouth Kickstarted first European effort ashore September 21st 1740 founding Kuskokwetet village according to tradition.. On February 14th 1800 Elijah Root purchased Lot #8 adjacent to Fitch House from Amos Eaton.– First Anglo American settlers arrive August 11th 1800 led by Captain Nicholas Cooley coming via boat downriver – Arrives just before start of Revolutionary War.– First Baptist Church organized June 3rd 1812.– Reverend Drury Colburn established first Anglican Priest Missionary Society congregation Decorah Academy Octavian Monthly Meeting house Dedicated Nov 28TH 1814 while Reverend Ephraim Hale officiates services immediately following meeting room dedication.– Reverend Ebenezer Willard join forces with Rev Drury Colburn forming Congregationalist church April 25TH 1817 – Now Second Congregationalist Church located at South End Avenue Corner Brookline Road NE corner Willowbrook Drive SWNo matter how many times Second Congregationalist church burns down its members can rebuild same number each time similar architecture designed using local materials Seventh-day Adventists converted to Methodist Episcopal Church circa 1945Original brick wall behind rear sanctuary burned down circa1980 leaving interior exposedTo date no evidence suggests any connection between Seventh Day Adventists and arson incident
