In the early 1600s, Somerville was a small town on the north shore of Boston. It was known for its rice and other agricultural products. By the late 1700s, however, Somerville had become a manufacturing center for firearms. The town's first gunsmith, Nicholas Clapperton, built his shop in 1714. The Gunsmith's Shop building still stands today and is used as a museum. In 1765, John Fenton founded Fenton & Son Gunsmithing Works in Somerville to produce firearms for the British military. In 1811, Samuel Colt established Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company in Somerville to produce pistols and revolvers. Today, Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company is located in Peabody Heights outside of Boston.

The city ceased to exist on July 1, 2009 when its charter was revoked due to low population growth and lack of services available within its boundaries. As of 2000 census data, there were 8,180 people living in Somerville proper and 2,913 residing in areas annexed by or annexed into Somerville since 1830 (but including Fenway Hill).
