The first settler to live in what would become Somerville was John Clarke, who arrived there from Marblehead, MA on July 1, 1641. It wasn't until 1645 that Somerville received its official name - it was called Pemaquid Neck after two brothers who had come over from Rhode Island previous year withingoes for some fresh water resources. In 1649/50 another group of English immigrants moved into the area and named their settlement "Somerville" after Colonel John Slocum's family seat in New York City (now Schenectady). This group included Pitman Hall and his brother Thomas Pitman; Isaac de Vere; Nicholas Sargent; Obadiah Goode; Timothy Brownell; Sylvester Sewall; Elisha Fenway; Robert Treatwell (Robert Treatwell House) – all men from Westchester County, NY. By 1700 there were about 140 residents living in somerville proper while also including relatedry settlements such as Pemaquid Neck and Granby along with scattered outlying locations such as Andover Fields near Charlestownport or Waltham Crossroads near Newton Center. The Townshends arrived early enough to see action during King Philip's War when they donated land to be used as militiamen barracks along with other gifts totaling £100 which financed much of Roxbury's military campaign against the French in contemporary Massachusetts Bay Colony (later Quebec). After hostilities ended they returned home but continued to support militia activities through land sales and purchases until 1702 when their last major donation expired without being accepted by the townshend trustees despite pleas from many local citizens for use of their lands for civilian purposes only months beforehand! The first settlement in what is now Somerville was founded by Puritan refugees from England in 1634, and was named for Sir John Winthrop, an ancestor of the General Court of Massachusetts Bay. The town was chartered on July 24, 1786, and became a separate municipality on February 14, 1847. The present town center was built between 1856 and 1860.
