In 1825, when Watertown became an incorporated village, Somerville withdrew into itself and continued to be governed by its own board of selectmen until 1832 when it became part ofWatertown Required Municipal District (WRMD). In 1870, during Reconstruction Periods following America's victory over slavery in the American Civil War, Somerville began to rapidly grow because of its strategic location near major railroad lines connecting New England with Chicago and San Francisco. Migration from rural areas into Somerville started soon after Reconstruction ended; this included white refugees who had fled violence or poverty in southern states such as Alabama or Georgia during Reconstruction Era racial discrimination laws which barred blacks from owning property or serving in polite society without white approval. This influx has led some historians to argue that Somerville may have been more racially mixed than other towns within Middlesex County during this time period because it had more opportunities for integration than many other communities which experienced greater political violence and economic inequality following Reconstruction Periods across America

Somerville is a town in Franklin County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 23,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston–Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1630 as part of the Plymouth Colony. It was incorporated as a town on February 14, 1846. The towns of Lexington and Concord were also founded in 1630 as part of the Plymouth Colony but they were later merged into Somerville. In 1781, during the American Revolution, General NathanielColeman's Americans retreated through Somerville after being forced to march through Lexington and Concord. On July 4th of that year, Somerville patriots burned an effigy of royal governor John Adams at village meeting house (now former URI building). In 1820, when Boston became a city and Somerville became a village, both towns agreed to merge their water systems so that each would have its own public works department and fire protection system within five years. The merger went smoothly until 1841 when one local resident objected to having his name included on a mappublished by the new city government and requested his right to be forgotten about – he successfully sued for damages before finally dying without ever achieving this goal. During World War II somerville served as an airfield with various military installations including Wheelus Air Force Base which housed many P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft used in strategic bombing raids over Japan during WW2 In 1949 there was much excitement when it was announced that Northeastern University would open its doors in what had been an old militiary post office building across from Wheelus AFB
The town of Somerville, Massachusetts was founded in 1630 by Puritans. The town grew rapidly and by 1820 it had a population of over 2,000. The town was renamed Quincy in 1827 after the president of the United States, James K. Polk. In 1960, Quincy became part of Somerville.
