The name "Somerville" is from an English place name meaning 'settlement by the Somer family'. The first permanent settler in what would become Somerville was Nicholas Wolcott in 1636. He and his wife, Martha (née Phips), founded a small community on the border of present-day Somerville and Charlestown on April 15, 1636 as Wolcott's Manor. The Wolcotts were among the earliest settlers in what would become Somerville. In 1720, Caleb Warner built a house on Currently Main Street nearpresent Day Everett Library and School District No. 1 headquarters building (now University Hall). In 1812, John Winthrop led an expedition to found Harvard University in Cambridgeport and won passage for his group on HMS Beagle through the Strait of Gibraltar; however, he never arrived at Harvard because he fell ill with yellow fever after landing in Spain. Consequently, only six men out of eighteen who left England survived to carry out Winthrop's dream: John Eliot (a graduate of Harvard College), Isaac Newton (the first English professor at Yale College), Christopher Wren (the creator of London's landmark Trinity Church/Cathedral), Josiah Quincy (a delegate from Quincy Market to Massachusett General Court during King George III's reign), and Dudley Deane (the general superintendent for instruction within Congregationalist churches throughout New England). In 1822–23, Nathan Hale served as justice of peace for Middlesex County before being elected governor of Massachusetts in 1824 as part of the Whig Party coalition that included then-President James Kappenstaller’s Republican Party. At Hale’s inauguration as governor on January 8thof that year—just days after Kappenstaller’s death—he announced that “every inhabitant thereof [Somerly] must appear before him to be taxed for supporting government...This act will put an end to all electioneering between citizens thereof…and every man must take notice which way he may cast his vote without insulting or molesting others....It shall be lawful for no one but himself to give voting instructions." This became known as "Hale’s Law". As early as 1795–96 future Governor James Sullivan had proposed creating a township committee with authority over public improvements such as roads and drains within the township boundaries - similar proposals were made later by other political leaders including Mayor Thomas Manton Jr., who served from 1830 until 1847; selectman Nathaniel Parker Jr., who served from 1800 until 1850; Supervisor Samuel Adams Sr.; state representative Jabez Bond; Asbury Park official Jeremiah Nevin; and developer Moses Brownell - all rejected due to lack of financial backing or interest from residents or politicians alike. A bill authorizing creation of a town meeting district was introduced into the Massachusetts legislature on October 21st1795 by Representative Silas Deane but failed due largely to opposition from local farmers who felt their land would not benefit from incorporation into a new town hall district while those living closeby could continue doing so uninterruptedly without interruptionvia their farms! On December 9th1795 – following passage by both houses – Governor Hutchinson signed legislation establishing a town meeting district with Somerville Township included! In March1800 Daniel Webster created Downingtown Township eastward along present day Western Avenue toward Fall River when it was still unincorporated territory belonging primarily to Amherst Township proper - thus ensuring that any increase/decrease in population within either township would also impact neighboring Downingtown Township! In September1801 selectman Nathaniel Parker Jr./Nathaniel Ames recommended approving inclusionof Westchester Village into somerville upon its annexation into amherst following disputed elections there reflecting voters' choice between joiningWestchester Village or Amherst Townshend instead! After much back-and-forth decision making this recommendation finally went through on November 13th1801! When final maps were created showing Boundaries between AmherstTownshend & WestchesterVillage & City Limits they mistakenly placed WestchesterVillage insideCity Limits!! This mistake did NOT cause any loss OF revenue TO THE CITY OF AMHERST FROM THAT YEAR ON AS A RESULT OF THIS MISTAKE !!
