Somerville, Massachusetts is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 19,851 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Middlesex County and the second-largest city in New England after Boston. Somerville is located on the border of Somerville and Harvard townships. The first European to set foot in what is now Somerville was Capt. John Eliot who explored the area in 1634. In 1775, while fighting American Revolutionary War with British forces, General George Washington's army passed through Somerville on his way to Cambridge. The first gunsmiths shop in what would become Somerville opened its doors on July 15th of that year by Mr. Stevens with assistance from 2 other men named Freeborn and Sargent (later Wigglesworth). In 1829, Samuel Colt began manufacturing arms here including pistols for use by militia duty as well as later for police duty when rifles became available In 1857, Drury Brothers began fabricating wagons here which soon became a common sight throughout Massachusetts due to their sturdy construction and ability to carry large loads safely across rivers or crossings

The city has since lost much of its historical significance but remains a pleasant commercial center with many cultural attractions including two large libraries and three theaters. The town boundaries were changed to encompass all of Middlesex County in 1959 and it now extends into Quincy county to the east.

On October 15, 1635, the town of Somerville was chartered. The town was named after John Endicott, an Englishman who founded a trading post in what is now Somerville. The first settler in Somerville was Nicholas Herrick.
