Somerville, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 14,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Somerville was made on April 23, 1636 by Roger Williams and his fellow Puritans after they abandoned their earlier settlement at Providence Plantation in Rhode Island. In 1639, Samuel Winslow and Job Copley founded the town of Winthrop on a tract of land bought from John Winthrop. In 1642–1643, the towns of Watertown and Lexington were founded to support the war with Great Britain over the issue of religious freedom. On December 12, 1644, Somerville became a separate town under charter from Colonel Francis Frothingham. The first house built in Somerville was that of Thomas Gage (1551-1624), an important figure in early New England politics and one of its wealthiest men. In 1784–1785 General Jonathan Edwards settled in Somerville as pastor of a Presbyterian church located on West Street between crisp and sweet streets then called "the bowers" because it was near where he had hunted many years before while living at Northampton House on Longfellow's farmstead across Frome Pond from George Washington's Mount Vernon home. A year later Edwards moved to Charlestown but continued to preach here until his death in 1788." In 1812–1813 Captain Amos Morse located a vein of coal near present-day Somerville; this led to increased business for merchants such as Samuel Adams who offered tax concessions for locating coal mines within limits set by Commonwealth legislature which were also intended to reduce opposition against American independence movement efforts throughout New England region." After two years work during high water conditions they declared success on November 10th 1814: "They have found more than twelve thousand dollars' worth of coal." On May 8th 1815 Congress granted Royal Order Number 4754 giving exclusive rights for US mining operations within thirteen miles radius around Boston Harbor touching upon all waters including Narragansett Bay which included present day Woods Hole Harbor). This opened up much new territory including most notablypresent day Quincy Beach MA which would become known as Quincyport when port facilities developed there following World War II" After several failed attempts beginning December 1st 1825 Captain David Dudley began construction on what would become Dexter Pike – one mile long main road running east-west through today’s Freedom Trail corridor connecting Falmouth Junction IN with Amherst MA just outside Boston proper - naming it after himself “Drummond” rather than give away any landed property or royalties received from mined resources…." Plymouth Meeting House still stands today across from Dexter Pike off Route 128 westbound just past Webster Ave., next door to Lake Placid Recreation Area…." Dartmouth College opened its doors for formal instruction September 15th 1830 under Elijah Parish…. In 1835 Reverend Cotton Mather purchased 180 acres comprising present day Dexter Pike along with lots adjoining…Milton Academy [now Milton] School [now King’s School] served grades K-8 until 1840 when Head Start started…..During these years some residents did move out due to various difficulties such as bad weather or economic problems…..Many old families remain connected with their ancestral homes through Generations Keeper programs like my mother did". The population grew rapidly due mainly to waves OF immigration during 19th century followed by WWI THEN post WWII growth........... With technology becoming increasingly available many people left downtowns behind.. Manufacturing sectors expanded into peripheral areas......... With annexation by Cambridge city government in 2000 SOMERVILLE experienced rapid growth spurring development near public transportation.....Today SOMERVILLE has evolved into an vibrant community based primarily on Its quality schools and easy access to jobs....... Some things that make SOMERVILLE unique are its strong community spirit traits evident both inside and outside the school system; its close knit relationship with neighboring communities; Millbrook Farms reservoir providing abundant freshwater fish opportunities for local fishermen; nearby wooded hills accommodating hunting opportunities; wide variety of cultural attractions available such as art galleries & theaters etc.; well developed infrastructure including expressways access points enabling quick transports into/outofBoston.........
