In 1916, the city of Boston annexed Somerville to its limits. The first settlement in what is now Somerville date back to 1636 when English colonists settled on an island in present-day Quincy Harbor. By 1781, most of what isnow Somerville had been founded and by 1800 there were over 100 businesses operating in the town center. In 1821, during Queen Victoria's reign as monarch of Great Britain and Ireland, Somerville became part of Middlesex County under Governor Jonathan Sumner. At that time it was one of only two towns within Middlesex County with a Selective Service vote (the other being North Adams). As part of this government system which aimed to promote Anglo-Saxon culture through education and military service among certain groups within society including Jews, Catholics and others considered undesirable or unenlightened elements living outside British society – particularly Irish immigrants – Somerville served as an important port for goods exports from Middlesex County for many years until dredging began removing all but about ten feet (three meters) off the shoreline in 1950 which left muchhistoric buildings exposed at low tide exposing artifacts dating back to pre-colonial times including pottery fragments dating back 8000 BC! During World War II much larger quantities than ever before were produced here thanks to wartime gasoline production starting immediately following Pearl Harbor; however due largely to social engineering policies originated by Mayor William Fenton things like playgrounds (and later tennis courts) sprang up throughout what are now downtown areas without any input from citizens or Planning Department officials memory having any record whatsoever indicating such things existed when WWII started! Following World War II small businesses gradually stopped opening up throughout downtown while large industrial companies took their place; however despite this change not too long afterwards SOMERVILLE BAYYARD opened up down State Street from Winchester Avenue making it one of only a handful Of independentlyowned business districts anywhere along US Route 2 corridor! Finally starting around 2000 SOMERVILLE experienced something close to resurgence with several new restaurants/cafes opening up as well as newfound interest & support from residents & elected officials alike culminating finally with rezoning Ordinance No. 5010 giving Downtown SOMERVILLE BACK TO THE PEOPLE OF SOMERSETTCOASTMUNICIPALCITY AS PER THE PROVISIONS OF LAW NO: 7590!!!
