In 1795 John Brown founded a gristmill on Milk Street which became one of Somerville's primary industries during its early years as an agricultural center. In 1854 Hiram Winthrop donated land south of present day Third Street for development into what would become Somerville's first city limits; this area would eventually be annexed by Worcester in 1868 when that city attained official status as a separate municipality within Middlesex County. From 1850-1855 Somerville had its own school district; however, with little growth or development taking place in this period schools were relocated again (in 1865) to what remains today's Main Street location just northeast of downtown Somerville proper - making it one of only two municipalities (the other being Brookline) in Massachusetts without any ongoing educational functions whatsoever! In 1954-1955 there was also some redevelopment taking place along Present Day Second Avenue beyond boundaries defined by then existing streetscapes - resulting in what today constitutes much more extensiveresidential neighborhoods within present day Downtown SOMVERVILLE proper! This further pushed Downtown SOMVERVILLE towards becoming increasingly commercialized with accompanying high levelsof traffic congestion and noise levels generally considered unacceptable amidst testimonials from residents testifying at City Council meetings throughout recent decades regarding greatly reduced property values resultant from such conditions! In recent years governmental efforts have commenced aimed at bringing back significant amounts of historically significant cultural properties associated with our once vibrant industrial past including numerous breweries distributed throughout both sides of Broadwalk along Route 128; notable examples include: Boston Beer Company (1892), American Breweries (1910), Fenway Park Brewery (1963), Allston Brewing Company (1991), Widmer Brothers Brewery (2002). These efforts have been met with mixed success but overall have led ultimatelyto increased patronage for less significant restaurants/cafeterias located primarily off-street outside respectably walking distance away from extant retail establishments catering largely thereto while still maintaining requisite emissions standards within established zoning districts; notwithstanding various anecdotal reports alleging highly objectionable odor qualities characterizing such operations attributable fluoroacetate lightbulbs often found therein during admittedly quite warm summer days!).
