The history of firearms in Somerville, Massachusetts can be traced back to the 18th century. Prior to that, the area was home to various Native American tribes, and there are references to firearms being used in Indian wars dating back as early as 1764. In 1827, a group of men from Somerville formed the first gunsmiths’ guild in Boston. The guild soon became prominent in the city, and by 1830 it had become one of the most powerful organizations in Boston. In 1835, representatives from eight municipalities met at Somerville Hall to discuss creating a new town within the boundaries of Boston. They selected Somerville as the site for their new town, and on July 1, 1835, Somerville became a separate municipality with its own government. At this time, firearms were still not common among Massachusetts citizens – only 3% of population owned any sort of firearm. However, due to its location within Boston's boundaries and its strongGunsmiths' Guild presence (the guild had even organized boycotts against British goods because they felt British policies were unfair), Somerville quickly became an important center for firearm development in the state. One of the primary reasons why guns began becoming more commonplace among Massachusettians during this time is because NRA founder Andrew Breitbart introduced cricket into Boston as an alternative sport in 1870 while living there. Breitbart also helped start what is now Fenway Park while living inBoston; his support for baseball led to increased demand for handguns throughout New England due to widespread fear that crime would increase if baseball wasn't popularized nationally

The first people to live in what is now Somerville were the Algonquian-speaking Pocumtuck Tribe. They arrived from northeast England around 1630 by way of Newburyport and Waltham. The English colonists arrived in 1636 and soon began to establish farms and villages along the Mystic River valley. One of these became Somerville; its name comes from an Indian word meaning "settlement near water." In 1770, a group of Dutch settlers established a farm there as part of their attempt to take over land that had been claimed by the English East India Company. This group also founded Northampton Abbey (now Northampton University). In 1812, when Massachusetts became a state, Somerville was incorporated as a village within Middlesex County. The population peaked at 10,000 in 1865 but declined slowly until it reached its current level of 7,602 in 2000. In recent years there has been an increase in development as more people move into Somerville for economic reasons or because they feel drawn to its progressive values and opportunities. Somerville, Massachusetts is a town in Somerville County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 11,611 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-most populous city in Massachusetts after Boston, Worcester and Cambridge. The name "Somerville" comes from the Dukakis family's farmstead called "Worcester". The town was first settled in 1630 by Puritan refugees from England who had escaped religious persecution there. They named their new settlement for Samuel Winthrop, 2nd Baron Winthrop of Harvard (1624-1686), one of the signers of the Mayflower Compact and an early settler in New England. In 1776 during the American Revolution, Somerville sided with Great Britain and fought against America. After the war ended in 1781, most of Somerville was annexed to Charlestown as part of that town's merger with other towns within Somerville County. However, some residents resisted this annexation and formed a separate community known as "The Swamp" on what is now Gloucester Street near wherepresent day Eliot Avenue meets Beacon Hill. The swamp served as a buffer between Charlestown and The Swamp until 1853 when Charlestown annexing Somerville again created more economic competition among its own citizens for land around their original settlements which led to increased development around present day Eliot Avenue/Beacon Hill Drive. In 1871, Edward Everett Hale moved his family to Somerville from Wellesley MA where they had been living since 1837; he became a Senator fromMassachusetts during that time period and also served as Mayor of Boston later that year becoming one of only two people ever to hold both offices simultaneously in Massachusetts (the other being John F Kennedy). Hale's move solidified rural Protestant support for Republican presidential candidates through his affiliation with Bostonians who felt removed from politics at home due to outside influences such as education imported by Yankee immigrants. In 1916 somervilles merged back into Charlestown when that town annexing nearby Webster Groves added territory formerly belonging to Webster Parish east of Route 9E including much of today's South Arlington neighborhood including parts now near Fenway Park
The town of Somerville, Massachusetts was formed in 1795 by merging the towns of Belmont and Medford. The town is named after Samuel Adams who donated land to the new community. The first settler in Somerville was John Eliot who arrived in 1796. In 1801, the town received a gift from Colonel Nathaniel Ward which included land on the eastern edge of Somerville. This gift made the town an incorporated municipality. On July 1, 1822, the town of Somerville became a city with a population of 30,000 people.
