They built a farmstead on present-day Arlington Street known as Northampton House. This early settlement was abandoned about 1640 when troops under General John Winthrop burned down Northampton House and all its occupants for engaging in open rebellion against English rule. A group of Puritans from Charlestown, Rhode Island settled near what is now central Somerville soon after King George's War (1689-96). In 1693 they founded an new settlements called Southborough and Brewster Streets respectively; these became towns when Worcester County was formed in 1702. The first schoolmaster to teach within this new community was John Eliot, who arrived in 1705 and taught grammar and rhetoric at Southborough School until his death in 1717. Eliot's successor was Samuel Adams who served from 1721 to 1725 before becoming minister of Trinity Church (later Harvard University) where he developed distinctive theories about education which led to the founding of many later educational institutions including Yale University and MIT.. In 1812 the village of Amherst annexed what had been Brewster Streets eastward; this annexation placed Amherst between Cambridge and Boston along with other towns forming eastern Middlesex County during that period including Sudbury, Webster Groves, Brookline, Waltham Abbey etc.). However Amherst reverted back to its original form two years later when it voted not to annex any more villages/towns within Middlesex County despite pressure from neighboring towns such as Newton Abbot & Revere which lobbied unsuccessfully for incorporation into Greater Boston due to their strategic location atop mountains bordering on both cities! The town rapidly expanded during the 19th century due primarily to heavy industrialization throughout northeastern Massachusetts due Great Britain's transition into a modern industrialized nation following its victory over France in World War 1 (1814-1815). Some residents chose to stay in their homes until they could be evacuated or moved out before they were bombed again; however most people left within hours or days after being warned about possible bombings weeks earlier by American military personnel stationed in nearby Framingham and Newton. In 1990s there were efforts to annex much of neighboring Arlington Heights which had also grown rapidly due to its concentration of jobs in downtownBoston along State Street/ Congress Street corridor; however this failed because both Arlington Heights residents who wanted annexation voted against it while most Somerville residents opposed it based on what they perceived as negative effects that would come with such an annexation including increased taxes and less access to various services within their own community including public schools and libraries
