From 1820 to 1830, it served as the county seat of Middlesex County; however, this role was ultimately transferred to Boston when that city became self-governing through a charter granted by President James K. Polk in 1833. The town obtained its current name from its location near Somerville College—the original site for Harvard University—in 1837 when that college became coeducational with other universities across Massachusetts following passage of a state law authorizing such change. The townsfolk voted for somervillecollege instead of Harvardsville because they felt that Harvardsville would have been too much like Cambridge, where they lived previously. The post-secondary enrollment increased rapidly throughout the 19th century; consequently, Somerville developed into one of Massachusettes most populous communities outsideBoston or Providence. In 1870–71 alone, Somerville's population grew by more than 25 percent due to waves of European immigration followed by growth among African Americans during Reconstruction period following American Civil War (1861-1865). Rapid development also created problems both economic and social: overcrowding led to increasing calls fordensity controls during World War I; crime rates soared after repeal/abolitionof Prohibition;and poverty increased with graduates entering major cities while others sank into poverty within their own neighborhoods due to lack thereof affordable housing opportunities
