Somerville, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 8,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The name "Somerville" originates from the English word "somerset." The first settlers in what is now Somerville were British soldiers who moved to the area in 1630 during King James I's war with France. They named their community after John Somerford, 1st Baron Somerford, one of the main participants in that conflict. The first home of the town was built on Meeting Street between 1768 and 1770 by Ebenezer Channing and his wife Hannah Gridley. The early years of Somerville were difficult due to a lack of resources and social unrest caused by increasing Irish immigration and conflict with Puritan settlers nearby over land rights and trade opportunities. However, through hard work and determination, Somerville slowly began to grow into its current form as a thriving small town. One important aspect of Somerville's history are its many churches – including three original Anglican churches dating back to 1692–93: St Paul's (founded 1768), Harvard Chapel (founded 1834), and Whittier Chapel (founded 1872). These churches have been instrumental in shaping the community into what it is today; they provide anonymity for many residents which makes it difficult for outsiders to judge how any given parish functions or interacts with other parts of town. As one of only two towns in Middlesex County without a school district (the other being North Reading), much progress has been made towards creating one since 1997 when local parents successfully lobbied for passage of a bill establishing the township’s first school district. That district currently serves all residents within Somerville Township excepting Arlington Heights which falls within Quincy School District 2A . In February 2014, voters passed another bill setting out plans for re-opening both schools once again as part of Mayor Marty Walsh’s goal “to make sure that every resident could get an education whether they live here or not” . This will finally bring new life back to these landmarks which have languished since before high school students even had time to learn about them!

Somerville, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston–Cambridge-Newton, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is named after Samuel Adams who founded it in 1768. The town was first settled by English colonists in the early 17th century and its earliest known records date to 1632 when John Winthrop and other settlers arrived here from England. In 1654, Somerville became a part of Roxbury Township. On July 14, 1768, the town voted to become its own independent jurisdiction under the new Commonwealth of Massachusetts laws which took effect that day. As a result of this vote, Somerville became one of only two towns in what would become New England to be granted such an independence from their colonial masters. The original courthouse building still stands today on Milton Street in downtown Somerville and is used as community center and public meeting space as well as serving as home to many local businesses including banks and law firms. The older courthouse burned down in 1892 but was soon replaced by a new structure which still remains today on Main Street near where Community Park now stands
The town of Somerville was founded in 1798 by Increase Mather and is located on the border of Middlesex and Suffolk counties. The town was originally named "Langdon" after John Langdon, a British surveyor who explored the area. In 1812, the town received its present name, which comes from the ancient name of Somerville, Massachusets Bay. The first post office in Somerville opened in 1814. The town grew rapidly during the 1800s due to its strategic location between Boston and New York City. By 1830, Somerville had a population of over 2,000 people. However, by 1840, the population had decreased to just over 600 people due to new settlements being developed around it. The Panic of 1847 resulted in a decrease in business activity in Somerville as many residents lost their jobs during the economic slump following the Panic. In 1850, however, Somerville again experienced growth when it became part ofBoston's newly formed Metropolitan District. During this time period, many new businesses were established within Somerville including a lumberyard and an ironworks. After Boston's incorporation as a city in 1898, contributions from citizens such as Samuel Morse helped make Somerville one of Boston's most prosperous towns during this time period with an unemployment rate below 1%. Despite this success however, by 1910 there were only about 100 residents living within the boundaries of present-day Somerville. However, since then the community has continued to grow significantly with current boundaries comprising much moher parts of Quincy and Everett square
