The original Mayflower Compact—signed by Pilgrims John Winthrop and his wife Katherine Privy Council member Mary Standish—stated that all Adults must join together “to plant a Christian Village” westward from England by crossing over “the seas” into North America. This compact signaled something significant about Puritanism: It emphasized self-reliance and adherence to biblical principles rather than relying on outside help or guidance from others. It wasn't until January 15, 1692 when William Bradford became governor of Plymouth Colony after Sir Thad Munson withdrew as governor due to illness—a sign that things might start going wrong for the colony if Munson continued leading them—thatorganized prayers were held for guidance about how best to settle this new place they had found themselves in. That spring Presbyterian minister Cotton Mather organized a meeting at Saline Tavern where he proposed that worship services be conducted not just withinEnglish churches but also among local Native Americans so that “we should see God face to face […] And it came into our minds […] To humble ourselves before him” as part of preparations for arriving in what would become known as Massachusetts Bay Colony two years later
