In 1791, when George Washington moved his family from New York City to become President of the United States, he purchased land adjacent to Salem for $2,000. Because it was difficult to find suitable land in Boston for people of modest means, Washington decided to establish a charity school on his plantation that would provide education and opportunities for poor children from all over Massachusetts. One year before he became president, Washington donated land from his plantation to house a school that would be open to all children regardless of background or class status. The first school building was built on Congress Street near what is now Quincy Market in downtownBoston. Over time, other buildings were added along Congress Street including a synagogue (1793), an opera house (1812), and an hospital (1851). In 1833, part of what is now Quincy Market was destroyed by fire; this event helped convince legislators to build another building on the site – the present-day State House – which they did in 1835 following recommendations from Govs Andrew Johnson and Jonathan Edwards. The State House includes rooms where some famous cases such as Bloody Mary are said to have occurred; however no evidence exists linking these events with Salem Witch Trials days later
