The first European settlers in what is now Salem were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1636. The English began settling here in 1641 when they took over from the Dutch as proprietors of North America. In 1796, Salem was merged with Newburyport to form one large town. The growth of tourism has led to an increase in population since then; however, Salem remains a small town economy largely based on agriculture and service industries. Salem's history dates back to before British settlement even began here: its name means "village on high ground" or "holy place". One theory holds that it derives from an Indian word meaning "place where good things grow", which may have been applied because there was abundance of wild fruit trees around this community during colonial times. Other theories suggest that Salem's name comes from a man named Samuell who settled hereabouts in 1600; or that it derived from early Spanish explorer John Cabot's visit to this area two years earlier (1595). The first permanent European settler in what is now Salem was Hendrick van den Bergh who arrived about 1636 with his family – including his wife Cornelia (alias Noyes) – and their twelve children under the age of fourteen. He built himself a house near present day Day Street along with another set of houses for his workers which still stand today within walking distance of each other on Park Avenue East. From these beginnings until 1796, all but three years when Salem was combined with Newburyport for one larger municipality, all individuals living here were either white English or Dutch Protestants Ascendants born within Englands or Netherlanders who had come over as indentured servants or refugees following religious persecution back home at home or during their voyage across the ocean during King James' War (1689-1692). In May 1796, due to increasing enrollment at Yale University located nearby and fears about slave trade activities taking place off Cape Cod Bay - especially between Rhode Island and Connecticut - new legislation was passed limiting free Negro immigration into Massachusetts beyond fifty miles inland from any African source noted by law enforcement officials as being connected with contraband smuggling activity both domestically (the major centers being Derby and Lynn) as well as internationally via tidal water routes connecting Africa through Bermuda to southern points such as Jamaica without entering American soil proper [1]. This act also included establishing county lines extending inland beyond those originally delineated by Plymouth Colony authorities some twelve years earlier! This measure effectively ended open access for white Protestant immigrants seeking access not only to jobs found available within our rural areas but also opportunities for education outside our traditional Puritanical circles much like what occurred subsequent waves of Latino/a arrivals starting around 1840 onward culminating up until World War II [2]. During World War II, Salem played an important role in the war effort by providing munitions production facilities for munitions plants throughout New England. In 1945, following Japan's surrender, all American military personnel must leave Japan except for those working at Shizuoka Naval Base which closed on September 1st after 72 years of service! As a result of this event during World War II – aka "the end" – many veteran soldiers brought their families back home while they still could; some founded small businesses here while others took up permanent residence within days or weeks thereafter Upon returning home from war service (or even longer), many veterans decided to stay put rather than move back into cities where they would face new challenges every day like finding rented space or opening up their own business!
