Theriot began when officers tried to disperse a group of protesters who had assembled in the town square. A year later, on November 7th, 1877, an even larger riot took place in Salem after police responded to reports of a fight between two men outside the jail. In this incident, six people were killed and over fifty were injured after being sprayed with pepper spray by police officers. After these events, pepper spray became more commonly used by law enforcement in America. It remained popular until the early 1990s when it began to be banned in some jurisdictions due to its potential danger to both users and bystanders. Today, pepper Spray remains an occasional tool used by law enforcement in America but is no longer typically used for crowd control or riots

In 1850, a new courthouse was built on State Street near where present day Elm Street meets State Street; this courthouse remains standing today and is used as part of the Town Hall complex which also includes a library/cafeteria complex on site as well as several housing units for students attending Harvard University nearby.
