In 1820, Salem's first optical shop opened its doors. The proprietor, Mr. Webb, sold glass and prismatic lenses to the townspeople for use in their telescopes and microscopes. From this initial shop, Salem soon became a leading center for optical products. In 1828, the United States Patent Office issued a patent to John Smeaton for his invention of the reflecting mirror. This allowed physicians and other professionals to view medical images more clearly than ever before. Smeaton's mirror also permitted Telescopic Viewing Rooms (TVRs) which were used by astronomers during the 1830s to image distant objects at high magnification. In 1838, Amos Kendall patented an improved design for a reflector telescope called the Kendall-Kendall Telescope or KKT (for "king's instrument"). This new telescope was designed to allow multiple observers to use it simultaneously and offered several improvements over earlier designs such as greater power and better resolution. By 1840, Salem had become one of America's leading centers for optics research with many prominent scientists living and working here. During World War II, much effort went into developing munitions production at Salem's Factories No. 1 and No. 2; these factories were instrumental in helping make weapons essential for Allied victory over Nazi Germany during World War II. The post-war period saw rapid growth at Salem thanks to population growth and heavy investment from both local businesses and federal government coffers; today many aspects of daily life are controlled by corporate entities based out of nearby Boston or Cambridge MA
Salem, Massachusetts is a town in Essex County, New York, United States. The population was 14,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester-on-Hudson metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Salem were French traders and travelers in 1624 who journeyed up the Mohawk River. They named their new settlement "Aigle" after an eagle they saw on their way back from a trading expedition up the river. A decade later, English colonists arrived and founded what would become Salem on November 15, 1636 by Major John Winthrop. The town rapidly grew in size as more and more people moved into its area for economic opportunities and land grants from the Crown. Salem's early years were difficult due to harsh winters and limited transportation options; however, it eventually recovered thanks to its rich natural resources including coal, iron ore, lumber and saltpeter. The town also became known for its famous witches – many of whom were executed during King George II's rule – as well as its spicy Indian cornmeal pudding which remains a popular dish today. In 1821, Salem was renamed Rochester after Genesee County seat Rochester (now Auburn). In 1845, the town merged with neighboring Brockville to form one large city with a population of over 50 thousand people. However, this merger did not go smoothly - Brockville had strong resentment towards Salem because of how they were treated while Rochester enjoyed great prosperity from their own commerce and education initiatives alone. As a result of this conflict (and other factors), Brockville lost much of its wealth in what has been called the "Rochester Rebellion." Despite these setbacks (and various other controversies), Salem has continued to thrive since becoming one of New York state's largest cities; it has seen significant growth in both housing prices and jobs opportunities since 2000. Today, Salem is home to some of New York City's most prestigious neighborhoods such as Beacon Hill/South End/East Village/Morningside Heights/Lenox Hill etc., making it an increasingly desirable place to live within commuting distance of major urban centers like Manhattan or Buffalo or Albany respectively
