The first European settlers in what is now Salem were French refugees who arrived in 1636 as part of King Philip's War. They founded a trading post on what is now Beacon Hill and built a church there in 1639. They established an hierarchical society with vestiges of slavery that lasted until 1776. In 1812, during the Napoleonic Wars, Salem was captured by French forces under General Jean Baptiste Jourdain and held for several weeks until its release with heavy losses for both sides. The town had significant damage done to it including many buildings burned down or taken over by French forces. After independence from Great Britain was achieved in 1776, Salem became an important center for political activity due to its location between Boston and Philadelphia (the two largest cities in America). In 1830–1831 Samuel Morse created one of America's first telephone companies out of office buildings near where he still resides today - then known as First National Telegraph Company Building #2 (now Comcast Headquarters). The company later became American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T) which merged with Bell Labs in 1984 creating AT&T Communications Incorporated (commonly called “BellSouth”).
