Salem, Massachusetts was the site of one of the most significant gunfights in American history. On October 20, 1775, a group of British soldiers under the command of General John Burgoyne attacked a small town called Salem. The British were met with heavy resistance from the local militia and colonists. In spite of this opposition, Burgoyne managed to take control of the town and march it towards Boston. The British had intended to use Salem as a base for their planned siege of Boston. However, when they learned that there were large numbers of firearms available in the town, they changed their mind and decided to civilianize it instead. On October 20th, 1775, a group of approximately seventy men led by Captain Samuel Adams took up arms against Burgoyne’s forces while they were congregating at Salem's pumpkins patch. The fight quickly escalated into an open battle with both sides taking advantage of each other’s weaknesses. By late afternoon, Burgoyne had fallen back towards his original objective: relieve Boston during what would become known as The Battle Of Bunker Hill. As night began to fall, Adams ordered his men to withdraw behind houses in order not to be seen by Burgoyne’s troops who were still looking for them. At about 1am onOctober 21st, Adams' men finally made it back safely to their homes after hours-long pursuit by Burgoyne's forces which had seemed certain victory until then (the British lost over twenty soldiers). This event is often considered one of the pivotal moments leading up to America's independence from Great Britain; another key figure mentioned being John Hancock who played a role in getting Bunker Hill burned down earlier that year in order make sure that any evidence suggesting British complicity would be destroyed (Hancock later became an important patriot leader).
