Salem, Massachusetts is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts. It was named for the English Village of Salem. The first permanent settler in what is now Salem was Nicholas Stillman, who arrived on October 16, 1636. In 1639 he and his family built the still extant Stillman House on the west side of Walnut Street. The house remained in use until 1835. The early history of Salem is replete with violence and turmoil; it played host to several Massacres including that of December 15, 1692 when Protestant worshipers were massacred at the town's meetinghouse by Puritan settlers. In 1776, during the American Revolution, Salem sided with the United States against Great Britain. On November 3rd, 1776, a monument bearing the inscription "In Peace and Friendship We Shall Keep Our Ancestors Alive" was erected at Meeting House Square in honor of those killed in battle or committed suicide during that year's war effort. After independence was achieved in 1783 and Salem became an incorporated town under state law (it had been a part of Ipswich since before that), its citizens voted to rename themselves "Salemians," reflecting their allegiance to their new nation rather than to England/. The name stuck and today most people refer to themselves as "Salemians."
