In 1692, English settlers in Salem, Massachusetts began to purchase land east of the river. One of the earliest purchases was made by John Eliot, who named his land "Eliot's Hill." In 1718, George Washington and his army were stationed at Eliot's Hill during their campaign against the French. The Battle of Bunker Hill was fought nearby on October 17th. A plaque marking the battle site is located near Northampton Street and Water Street in Salem.
